Living Moss Mats

Found a discarded industrial welcome mat, damp and dirty, with moss starting to grow on the edges.

Folded the mat and placed it in an area abundant with healthy moss for 3 months, witnessing it evolve into a mini landscape with various moss varieties.

Unfolded the moss mat, discovering moss peaks in soil-collecting nooks and folds.

Plants took root in the collected soil, bringing the moss mat to life with newfound vitality.

Introduced different moss varieties and leaf mulch, repositioning the mat for another month, observing the continued growth and transformation.

Sadly this work could not continue as a helpful citizen who did not realise it was art - threw it away! July 2024

I hope to revisit this work in the future in a less public space.
